Easy Cinco de Mayo Activities for Students

Cinco de Mayo offers a wonderful opportunity to introduce children to Mexican culture, history, and traditions. Many Mexican Americans and Americans celebrate this holiday, so educating your students about the culture will help them have an accurate view of the holiday and allow them to appreciate it appropriately. Let me share some educational activities tailored for 7-9 year olds:

1. Begin Cinco de Mayo Activities with a History Lesson

Start with a brief history lesson on Cinco de Mayo, explaining its significance and origins. Spend time emphasizing that the reason behind the Cinco de Mayo celebration is for the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla, not Mexican Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16th. An easy way to do this is by using a YouTube read-aloud that tells the history simply for students to enjoy.

2. Use a Map Exploration

Show them where Mexico is on a map and discuss its neighbors, geography, and landmarks. You can mark the city of Puebla, where the battle took place. Use Google Earth to let students see the country’s physical features as well.

3. Cinco de Mayo Activities & Papel Picado

Make papel picado (cut paper decorations) by providing colorful tissue paper and scissors. You can integrate this activity with math teaching students to cut out shapes for geometry practice Students can design a papel picado by cutting out shapes and then identifying the shape’s attributes. Here is a how-to video to help get you started! Hang the flags as decor for the day to celebrate!

4. Tasting the Culture

Have a taste test with different types of Mexican candies or fruits. Another route to take would be to provide different types of pan dulce you can buy from a local bakery. By allowing students to taste food from different cultures, it gives them a multi-sensory learning experience. And for the students who are from that culture, it gives them pride in sharing their traditions with their classmates.
